The Uncertainty of Obedience

By: Mike Tomashewski, The Stewardship Team Chair

And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. (Acts 8:39)

Those familiar with the story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch can speak to the depth of teaching contained in a few short verses. We see a clean extension of the Gospel to not just Gentiles, but to outright foreigners. We see the role of baptism in the life of a new believer. We see how the entirety of Scripture points towards Christ’s redemptive act on the cross. However, we don’t know what happens next to the eunuch. We know there is a strong Christian presence in Africa today—perhaps this act was the start.

In some cases, the call to obedience, particularly in the area of giving, can have a similar feeling of confusion for the giver. We respond, and we don’t see the impact. What does this act accomplish? Does my gift really matter? The biblical answer is yes! God can do all that we can ask or imagine, but graciously wants to involve humanity into carrying out His purposes on Earth. These simple acts of giving play into God’s plans.

Our prayer for you is that you will see how faithfulness is used by God to accomplish His ends. This doesn’t look the same to everyone. Maybe you are involved in an area of ministry that has funding needs that you see achieved. Perhaps you care deeply about a mission agency and can see Hebron able to deepen our support of it. As you walk with Jesus, it is our hope that you will be able to look back on your life and see how decisions, even simple and consistent ones can bring about big changes not only in your life but in the lives of others. When you see that, let people know and praise God’s plans!
